Changing standards monitored by Carl F
Carl F Petersen Ltd, which celebrates the twentieth anniversary of its UK hardware distribution company next year, observes the increasing importance of security standards.
An in-house team at Carl F ensures that the company's product portfolio is continuously updated to meet any new or revised standards. One recently updated standard is BS EN1303 - changes to this legislation mean that profile cylinders now need to pass an anti-manipulation test conducted by the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA).
Commenting on the market's response to the changes to BS EN103, and confirming Carl F's product recommendations, Business Development Manager Bruce Bradshaw said:"A number of organisations have made significant R&D investment to respond to the needs of the standard which has resulted in products designed to resist bumping.
After an extensive market review, Carl F selected the KABA GeGe RAM cylinder, one of just four products that have gained Kitemark accreditation, and the first to achieve the Kitemark licence. The cylinder is anti-drill, pick and bump and, from August 08, will be available with an integral anti-snap feature.
“Multi-point locks with replaceable profile cylinders have made major advances from the old-fashioned mortice lock - most significantly, the number of key differs. Under BS EN1303 Grade 4, a Euro profile cylinder must provide a minimum of 30,000 key differs. When a cylinder is not used, BS3621 requires a minimum of only 1,000 differs.
Replacing a cylinder is straightforward with the new generation profile cylinders and the homeowner has the opportunity to choose to have the same key fitting all doors in the property.”In addition, profile cylinders offer the homeowner the opportunity to choose to have all doors in the property keyed alike with the same key fitting front, back, patio and French doors (both sashes)."
Carl F promotes the KABA GeGe RAM cylinder partnered with a high quality multi-point lock - the FUHR Multisafe range is recommended. The company reports that this combination offers assurance that the lock assembly has passed independent testing for all EN1303, PAS024 and Secured by Design requirements.
